MOUNTAIN COSPLAY RETREAT DARES TO BE DIFFERENT
Getaway and Cosplay in the Heart of British Columbia
Kamloops, BC, June 12, 2017 – Now in its second year of operation, Mountain Cosplay Retreat (MCR) has doubled up its promise to photograph iconic characters in natural settings. This year’s ensemble showcased five photographers and 12 cosplayers from across Canada and the US. New practical effects like smoke grenades, lighting, and underwater cameras amidst Birken’s vibrant lakes, forested mountains, and natural waterfalls added an exciting edge to wilderness cosplay. Here’s a sneak peek.
Founder Amanda Eccleston of Beebichu Cosplay states, “Our second year was even bigger and more badass. There’s nothing else quite like us in North America. We bring cosplayers and photographers together for three full days and everyone gets a chance to work together to create great art.”
It can be difficult to stand out in a heavily saturated convention scene. At MCR, photographers and cosplayers shoot in small groups across a variety of settings selected to suit their characters. This emphasis on realism and immersion means MCR’s photos stand out in both creativity and composition, allowing those countless hours of costume production time to truly shine.
Alex from Alexandra Lee Studios applauds MCR’s approach: “I’m from Louisville KY…and I’ve never been to Canada before. But life is about risks, you get your best art by taking risks. I took a risk with MCR and I made some of my best work yet. If you’re a photographer and thinking about going on this trip: Do it.”
MCR’s community is relaxed and inclusive by creed. Participants mingle, forge bonds, learn techniques, and hone their art. Each year brings new cosplays and photography innovations to the table, ensuring each retreat-goer’s experience is original and different.
